UCTISL First Division Preview: Promotion Race Sharpens as Washed Athletic Close In on Automatic Spot

Nine fixtures across a midweek slot and the usual weekend programme await First Division fans, with the picture at both ends of the log getting clearer by the week. Here's the enthusiastic lowdown ahead of kickoff.

Wednesday, September 30, 7:00 PM — Quality Ballers FC vs Umbala FC (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
Bottom side Quality Ballers FC, already staring down automatic relegation, were thumped 8-0 by Upper Campus last time out and desperately need something here. Standing in their way is an Umbala FC side that has been superb of late, having just beaten Peters Couch to climb into sixth. This one looks tough for the home side.

Saturday, October 3, 1:00 PM — Bayer Neverlosen vs Forest Hill (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
Bayer Neverlosen, managed by Dyllan Stoll and still pushing on after their 2024 relegation scare, arrive full of confidence following a 4-2 win at University House. They face a Forest Hill side under Sandile and Lindo who are also riding high after a 2-0 win at College House. A genuinely tasty mid-table clash.

Saturday, October 3, 2:30 PM — V-Chester vs Salisbury FC (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
V-Chester, the Rochester House and Varietas alliance, host a Salisbury FC side sitting in the relegation playoff spot after a narrow defeat to Avenue Rangers. Mark's young Champagne Kings need points urgently if they're to climb out of the drop zone before the season's end.

Saturday, October 3, 4:00 PM — Washed Athletic vs Woolsack (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
Huge stakes here. Washed Athletic have surged into second place — an automatic promotion spot — after a 5-2 romp at Carinus, and they'll be keen to keep the momentum going against a Woolsack side that were thrashed 4-1 by league leaders OBZ Square. Former champions Woolsack, will need a big response.

Sunday, October 4, 9:00 AM — Peters Couch vs Salisbury FC (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
Third-placed Peters Couch, home of star striker Leigh Austin, will be eager to bounce back from their surprise loss to Umbala FC when they welcome a struggling Salisbury FC side, who they demolished 9-0 just last week. History suggests this could be another long day for the Champagne Kings, but Peters Couch can't afford to look past them with that all-important promotion playoff spot at stake.

Sunday, October 4, 10:30 AM — My Domain Salt River vs Upper Campus (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
My Domain Salt River, well-funded and firmly in the promotion mix in fourth, face an Upper Campus side that has suddenly found its scoring boots, having smashed eight past Quality Ballers FC last weekend. Kennedy Makgotla's men will fancy causing an upset here.

Sunday, October 4, 10:30 AM — Umbala FC vs Washed Athletic (Rhodes Recreation Ground B)
The standout fixture of the round. In-form Umbala FC, winners of three straight, host second-placed Washed Athletic in a match that could go a long way toward deciding who joins OBZ Square in the Premier Division. Expect fireworks.

Sunday, October 4, 12:00 PM — Woolsack vs Idiots FC (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
Woolsack, still searching for consistency in 14th, host an Idiots FC side in excellent touch after a 3-1 win over 11 And Under. Nick Taylor's men, missing star man Michael De Gouveia but full of fight, will fancy adding to Woolsack's troubles.

Sunday, October 4, 1:30 PM — OBZ Square vs University House (UCT FC Kopano Astroturf)
League leaders OBZ Square remain utterly dominant — thirteen wins from fourteen and a staggering +43 goal difference — and welcome a University House side who were beaten 4-2 by Bayer Neverlosen last time out. Barring a miracle, OBZ Square's march toward the Premier Division looks unstoppable.

With OBZ Square and Washed Athletic now occupying the two automatic promotion places, Peters Couch holding firm in the third-spot playoff berth, and Carinus and Quality Ballers FC anchored in the automatic relegation zone with Salisbury FC in the playoff spot, the picture is sharpening fast as the season heads toward its climax. Another unmissable round of First Division football awaits!
