UCTISL PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW: FINAL GAME WEEK, A TITLE DECIDER AND A FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL

It’s here! Game Week 17 is the last full round of the Premier Division season, and it has everything: a league-leaders clash that could crown a champion, and a three-way scrap to avoid the drop. A handful of catch-up games next week will tidy up the rest, but the big moments are this week. Remember, the bottom three at the end of Game Week 17 are relegated to the First Division.  Nexus FA have completed their 17 fixtures without a point and are the first side certain to go down.

GSR vs The Thirds, 7:30 PM, Kopano Astroturf
This is a huge one for The Thirds. Khumbulane Mbatha’s side sit 15th on 11 points after a 6-1 loss at Lijabatho and a wild 4-4 draw with SD FC, and their defence has leaked 48 goals. A win would take them to 14 points, which is more than either Medical Res or Marquard Lions can still reach. GSR are unbeaten in four, including a 1-1 draw with Irietech, and Ryda’s Elephants are the busiest side this week with two games in five days.

Saturday, October 17

DTL FC vs SD FC, 7:00 PM, Kopano Astroturf
Expect goals. DTL FC have found their form under Bokang and Ayanda, with a 5-0 win over Marquard Lions and a 3-0 win at Medical Res in their last three. SD FC have scored 50 goals this season, second only to Sandenburg, and they are always entertaining, as shown by that 4-4 draw with The Thirds. A win would lift SD FC to 32 points, and the reigning champions will want to end their 17 games on a high.

Sunday, October 18

City Edge vs Lijabatho, 1:30 PM, Kopano Astroturf
Two free-scoring sides meet. City Edge’s player-led leadership group are unbeaten in their last five, including a 5-4 thriller against Marquard Lions and a 3-3 draw with Sandenburg. Lijabatho, with Alaska pulling the strings, hit six against The Thirds and scored three at Roscommon House. Buckle up.

St Peters Res vs False Bay College - FHC, 3:00 PM, Rhodes Recreation Ground A
St Peters Res are flying. Four straight wins, the latest a 3-0 win over Kopano FC, have lifted them to fourth, and Smangaliso’s back line has the best defensive record in the league with just 13 goals conceded. They still have a game in hand, so the title is not quite out of reach. False Bay College have lost their last three, including that 10-2 defeat to DTL FC, but their passionate supporters will be roaring them on in a bid to finish the week on a high.

Afghan FC vs Kopano FC, 3:00 PM, Kopano Astroturf
Afghan FC have lost three in a row, and their captain-led setup badly needs a result. Kopano FC were beaten 3-0 by St Peters Res but won 3-0 against DTL FC the week before, and Aux’s men sit fifth. A win would lock up fifth place, as SD FC could reach only 32 points.

Good Hope Athletic vs Marquard Lions, 4:30 PM, Rhodes Recreation Ground A
Good Hope Athletic’s almost entirely new squad have had an up-and-down campaign, but a 3-0 win over Medical Res showed what they can do. On 14 points, they are out of reach of the bottom three. Marquard Lions are in the playoff spot on 8 points, with just this one game left. They can’t reach more than 11 points, so a win here is essential, and they showed plenty of attacking spirit in that 5-4 defeat to City Edge. This is their last chance to make it count.

Medical Res vs GSR, 4:30 PM, Kopano Astroturf
Medical Res have lost their last six and sit 17th on 7 points, in an automatic relegation place. They still have two games left, so their fate is not yet sealed. A win here would keep them alive, but GSR will arrive on a short turnaround looking to finish the job.

Sandenburg FC vs Vitacare All Stars FC, 6:00 PM, Kopano Astroturf
This is the main event. Sandenburg lead on 38 points, with the league’s best attack (59 goals), while All Stars are second on 37 with a game in hand and are unbeaten all season. The numbers make this simple: if Sandenburg win, they are champions, as All Stars could then only reach 40 and St Peters Res 39. If All Stars win, they move to 40 points with a game to spare and are champions. A draw leaves the title open. It doesn’t get much better than this.

The Big Picture
Irietech have finished their 17 games on 35 points and can only watch, with third place secure for now. At the bottom, The Thirds, Medical Res and Marquard Lions are fighting over one safe spot, the playoff place and the last automatic relegation place, and with catch-up games still to come next week, there are plenty of twists left.
